The Digital Twin — A Living Virtual Representation of the Data Center
A Digital Twin is the comprehensive, structured, and machine-interpretable digital representation of a physical asset across its entire lifecycle. Unlike simple 3D models or isolated simulations, a Digital Twin integrates all relevant aspects of an asset: properties, states, behaviors, relationships, and contextual information. It serves as a reliable entry point to everything known about that asset — either by containing data itself or by pointing to authoritative systems through stable references. In this sense, the Digital Twin is not a monolithic data store. It is a federated and semantic information object that unifies diverse data sources without requiring all information to be stored in one place. Its purpose is to provide clarity, interoperability, and consistency, enabling different systems, tools, and teams to work with a shared understanding of the asset.
The Asset Administration Shell — The Data Foundation Behind the Digital Twin
The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) provides the structural and semantic foundation that makes the Digital Twin reliable. It organizes asset information into standardized submodels, each grouping properties, states, and services for specific use cases. Through consistent semantics, unique identifiers, and machine-readable structures, the AAS ensures that data originating from different vendors or systems can be integrated without ambiguity. Rather than replacing existing tools or databases, the AAS connects them. It maintains trustworthy references to authoritative data sources and ensures that each piece of information is accessible, interpretable, and contextually correct. This turns the Digital Twin from a static representation into a dependable information hub capable of supporting automation, analytics, and intelligent services.
Our Project — Unifying AAS and Digital Twin for Next-Generation Data Center Operations
In our project, the Digital Twin and the AAS form a unified system:
- The Digital Twin provides the overarching representation and lifecycle perspective.
- The AAS provides structure, semantics, and federated references to the correct data.
Together, they create an interoperable, future-proof foundation for decision-making, monitoring, and automation. The Digital Twin becomes the intuitive interface for humans and systems, while the AAS guarantees that every value, state, or property shown is accurate, up-to-date, and semantically consistent. This approach also supports advanced technologies such as AI, XR, and simulation tools. These systems can interact with the Digital Twin with full confidence in the correctness and meaning of the underlying data — enabling scenario analysis, guided operations, or immersive visualization without risk of misinterpretation.
