What XR Is
Extended Reality (XR) is a collective term for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). These technologies combine digital and physical environments to create immersive and interactive experiences. XR makes it possible to visualize information spatially, interact with digital content in three dimensions, and explore environments or processes that cannot be accessed physically. This allows even readers with no previous exposure to XR to intuitively understand complex topics.
Why XR Is Relevant to Our Project
In our project, XR serves as a powerful tool to convert complex technical information into accessible visual experiences. We work with data and structures that span multiple layers—from facility infrastructure to hardware systems and virtualization. These layers are typically documented separately and are often difficult to grasp without deep technical background knowledge. XR bridges this gap by providing a more natural and spatial way to experience information, helping reduce misunderstandings and supporting cross-team alignment.
How XR Helps Visualize Complex Systems
data center environments involve intricate dependencies: physical layout influences hardware; hardware supports virtual services; and virtualized components depend on conditions within the physical facility. XR brings these relationships together in a unified 3D environment. By exploring systems spatially, users gain a clearer understanding of how elements interact, where information gaps exist, and how changes in one area impact others. This holistic visibility supports more informed decision-making across all participating teams.
XR as a Tool for Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer
Beyond visualization, XR strengthens collaboration by enabling team members to explore data center environments without needing physical access. This is especially valuable when dealing with restricted, remote, or sensitive locations. XR also makes it possible to simulate scenarios, train personnel, and discuss system behavior in a shared virtual environment. These capabilities streamline onboarding, enhance communication between disciplines, and reduce the risk of misinterpretation.
XR as a Foundation for Digital Twins and AAS
As the project evolves, XR will serve as an intuitive interaction layer for accessing the structured and semantically consistent information provided by the Digital Twin and the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). Instead of focusing on geometric or 3D representations alone, XR provides a way to explore relationships, data states, and asset information in a context-rich and user-friendly environment. Through XR, users can access the federated and authoritative data curated by the AAS and surfaced through the Digital Twin — enabling clearer understanding, faster navigation, and more confident decision-making. In this role, XR becomes a complementary interface technology that helps users engage with complex, interconnected systems without replacing the underlying data structures or altering their semantics.
